Kamakura Great Buddha
Kamakura has a rich historical and cultural heritage influenced by philosophy mixed with Samurai worriers' austere discipline of Chinese Zen Buddhism. Samurai worriers acquired real political power over emperors and the aristocracy who had ruled the country over 1000 years and established the first samurai government on the grounds of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in the 12th Century. The city of Kamakura is closed off surrounded by steep hills on three sides and facing the sea on the other side. It played an important role as a fortress dating back to the 12-14th Century. Hiking trails* have been improved to enjoy walking on old roads were cut through hills in the 13th Century. Kamakura facing Sagami Bay has been a popular destination for summer vacation today.
